Meadowvale West Family Chiropractic and Massage is a health and wellness clinic run by a women-led team of healthcare practitioners
Healthcare Team of female Chiropractors, Massage Therapist RMTs, and Acupuncturist in Mississauga Meadowvale

We know it’s daunting trusting a practitioner with your body or trying out a new therapy for the first time, so we’ve answered some of our most commonly asked questions:

  • When patients are in significant discomfort, and do not know what causes it, we do recommend booking with our Chiropractic Doctors first to diagnose the issue. That way you can address it with the proper interventions, and your treatment options will be discussed upon your initial assessment. Our doctors may recommend referrals outside our clinic if deemed appropriate, especially when imaging tests such as X-rays are required.

  • All of our practitioners are licensed and registered, so your treatments may be covered under your extended health insurance if it’s included in your policy. Please speak to our front desk should you have any questions regarding submissions for insurance coverage or reimbursements.

  • For any new patients, our Chiropractors will perform a thorough health history and physical assessment in order to make a proper diagnosis. It is from this diagnosis that we are able to discuss with you what treatments may be needed. In the rare occasion where our doctors decide that imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasound is needed, or if a referral out to a different practitioner is needed due to the nature of your condition, our doctors will discuss these options with you. If it is a straightforward case, we will proceed with treatment at the first appointment.

  • The number of sessions required varies depending on individual needs and conditions. Your chiropractor will develop a personalised treatment plan after an initial assessment. The general rule is this: the more recent and mild the symptoms are, the less sessions you will need, but the more chronic or intense the symptoms are, the more sessions you may need.

Once we're on the road to recovery where the primary pain is resolved, we may begin a maintenance program depending on how well you are able to keep your progress.

  • Chiropractic adjustments is a manual therapy technique that uses high velocity, low amplitude thrusts to move your spinal joints, which help restore motion in a joint that has been stuck or stiffened up. By doing so, it frees up your spinal movements, and allows your spinal nerves to flow unhindered, which is essential to your brain-body communication.

It is considered a safe and effective treatment for mechanical pain in the body, such as lower back pain or neck pain, and often removes the root cause of the discomfort (our Chiropractors like to describe it as “freeing a stuck gear in the body”). Most patients report feeling relief with minimal discomfort during chiropractic adjustments, though some may experience mild soreness similar to post-exercise muscle soreness, which typically resolves quickly.

  • Yes, chiropractic care is generally safe for children, and Chiropractors are trained to modulate treatment methods according to the specific needs and developing bodies of children. Our Chiropractors recommend checking in once kids begin to go through growth spurts, which may cause “growing pains” often because bones tend to grow faster than muscles, leading to mechanical imbalance that need to be corrected. Some parents bring their children in as early as infancy, due to conditions such as torticollis, which may lead to feeding difficulties. In the recent years, we notice more parents bringing in their adolescent kids due to postural issues (especially in the neck and shoulders) associated with prolonged screen usage.

  • Much like a car running its mileage, our bodies experience constant wear and tear through regular use via our daily activities, eg. prolonged sitting, looking down, etc. During your maintenance appointments, our Chiropractors spot any mechanical or neuromuscular dysfunctions that arise from your daily life, and help clear these restrictions or malalignments in your body. The better we keep you moving, the more you maintain your physical and cognitive longevity. Many of our patients stagger their monthly Chiropractor and RMT treatments to have a consistent biweekly routine to maintain their progress

  • Massage therapy (often also known as deep tissue massage) is an effective treatment for mechanical pain in the body, as it releases tension in your muscles and fascia, and allows better mobility and lymphatic flow. Massage Therapists primarily focus on treating your muscles, while Chiropractors prioritizes your joints (spine or others) and the nervous system. Our Chiropractors and RMTs often work together to achieve the best results for our patients.

  • Chiropractors are diagnostic doctors that can fully assess and provide a diagnosis for your condition and perform treatments accordingly, whereas physiotherapists are manual therapists often provide treatments based on a doctor’s diagnosis in the context of their assessments. While both practitioners treat similar issues, such as back pain, Chiropractors approach it from the context of your spine and your nervous system, whereas physiotherapists may prioritize your muscles and exercises. Our Chiropractors often work with trusted physiotherapists in Meadowvale to provide the best comprehensive treatment plans for our patients.

  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves, and is particularly effective for conditions like plantar fasciitis and tendonitis, where inflammation and pain can persist due to fibrous tissues, and hinder daily activities. By delivering targeted shocks, ESWT stimulates blood flow, encourages cellular repair, and reduces pain. Our shockwave practitioners often recommend combining shockwave treatments with rehabilitative exercises via our Chiropractors in order to recondition the injured area, and restore its proper function and strength—think break down and rebuild..

  • Due to its acoustic nature, patients often report feeling a moderate drumming sensation at the target tissue during treatment, which is necessary to break down fibrous “scars” in the target area, and allow proper healing.

Patients may sometimes experience minor achiness post-treatment due to the healing process being activated. However, our practitioners often recommend to avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications after receiving shockwave treatments so as not to downgrade the "good inflammation" which is part of the healing process.

  • While acupuncture was historically more prevalent in Eastern medicine, it has become more effectively integrated into Western modern medicine in the past few decades. Acupuncture needles, when stimulating specially selected points on the body (aka. acupoints), are shown to have a neuroanatomical mechanistic effect, leading to decreased inflammation, increased healing, desensitized nerve pain, and muscular tension relief. With modern science, acupuncture has undergone countless trials and studies to demonstrate effect on even whole body systemic functions, such as immunity, sleep, cardiovascular health, etc.

  • Since the needles used are much thinner than a hypodermic needle used in injections or bloodwork, patients often report minimal discomfort during the insertion.

Depending on the technique required for the treatment, some patients may experience achiness after the needles are removed, much like a post-workout soreness.
